This psychedelic leaf belongs to a type of Caladium known as a lance-leaf caladium, or sometimes a ‘strap-leaf caladium’, and you can see why; rather than the usual heart-shaped leaves, these are more pointy, and sometimes come with ruffled edges. The ‘Thai Beauty’ cultivar is beautiful and only becomes more interesting as it ages; the young leaves start out with lots of green, but turn into a bright pink as the leaf matures, and then fade into a lighter pink as it grows old.

I absolutely loved painting this leaf; it was so easy to immerse myself in painting lines within lines, circles within circles using my finest miniature brush. The intricate detailing was such a pleasure to do. I hope this piece pays homage to one of the most unusual leaves I have ever seen.
