Probably the most iconic and well-known houseplant leaf, Monstera deliciosa is a tropical plant that grows to gigantic heights in its natural habitat, clinging to and climbing up the huge trees found in rainforests. As a houseplant, it will eventually need support via a moss-pole, and as the plant matures it will develop the characteristic ‘holes’ or ‘leaf fenestration’. It is thought that this is an evolutionary adaption by the plant to allow sunlight to filter through to the lower leaves that otherwise may be shielded.

I painted this leaf on bigger A2 sized paper so I could do this magnificent leaf justice; in real life, it would still be a medium-sized leaf, as a full size Monstera leaf can be ‘monster-sized!’. The waxy, leathery texture of the leaf was difficult to achieve, as was the subtle shine, but I love how this leaf looks and gives an instant ‘lush tropical rainforest’ vibe to any room.
