Tillandsia ionantha is an adorably small air plant that grows to between 6 and 8 cm in height. The leaves start turning fuchsia as it gets ready to flower, and then the vibrant purple flowers emerge from the centre.

This painting took me a long time as I had to capture the individual detail of each spiky leaf. This was made harder by the overlapping leaves and having to make sure that the watercolour did not smudge, ruining the white space between the leaves - I did not use masking fluid for this painting!
